Travel Packing Tips

April 30, 2006
as seen on FlyLady.net
by Leslie aka MissusSmartyPants

Dear Friends,

Last Sunday I had the pleasure of going shopping with Leslie and Leanne. Leslie helped me to put together a Travel Trousseau.

When we went to Salt Lake City, my sister Paddi teased Michele and me by calling us bag ladies. We love our FlyLady tote bags. I always pack one in my suitcase for that overflow moment when we head home. I never know what to pack so I pack several outfits, "JUST IN CASE"!

We have a new season of travel and none of my last summer clothes fit any longer. Leslie was so kind to help me. It was so much fun. She and Leanne picked out a base outfit and I got to try on many accessories and tops to change things up. I was very happy with our final selections. We had a lot of fun and we laughed all afternoon. I now understand about my body type and the style that looks best on me.

Once you know; you will never look at clothing the same way. I have always bought items based on color and how they fit, never on their cut and line. My horizons have been expanded.

I asked Leslie to write an essay about a Travel Trousseau for all of you. Maybe the next time I travel, I will only have to carry one small bag. OK a medium bag, after all I am a SHE!

A Travel Trousseau

Dear Friends,

Nothing ruins a trip for me more than lugging around heavy luggage yet, I still want to look my best when traveling. Be prepared when you make a plan and have a `Travel Trousseau'.

I have some tried and true tips that can help you make your next trip, regardless of the reason, a pleasure trip.

Here again the Wardrobe Basics come into play…

1. Basics. Build your Travel Trousseau from your Wardrobe Basics. All separates must mix and match with each other.

2. Favorites. Pack clothes that you love to wear. Being confident and comfortable is the only way to go. This isn't the time to try out new shoes!

3. Knits. Pack comfortable knits that don't require ironing. I know I try not to spend my trips in a hotel room ironing all night!

4. Layers. One of my favorite garments to take when traveling is a two-piece sweater set. Dress each piece up or down, together or separately. You can wear the sweater with the cami, add some different jewelry and have a whole now look! Or, wear the shell under the blazer.

Here's what I would take on a 3-day business trip:

My favorite pant suit (includes plain-front pants, blazer).
My favorite dress jeans.
A dress skirt (a print that works with the jacket and sweater set).
Dressy tee in a complimentary color.
A two-piece sweater set (again, in a complimentary color).
Structured large bag for everyday.
Small "fun" purse for evening.
Black pumps (for suit and skirt).
Slip-on mules (for jeans or when you wear the suit pants).

Earrings (2pr) one for daytime, one for night.
Focal point necklace (to wear with my sweater set).

Pack all of the above in one easy-roll suitcase. Now I use a colored suitcase, because everyone has a black one! This helps me find my luggage quick!

Make sure that you don't forget your makeup and accessories! I pack some small makeup samplers from the department stores, along with some of my favorite makeup. Take a lighted mirror with batteries, too.
While traveling, the mirror and lighting are never good enough!

Take the right attitude with you. You need to hold your head up and visualize yourself beautiful! You now have everything you need for a fabulous trip!

Have a great trip!

Leslie

Here is one of the many testimonials Leslie and I are receiving.

EXTREME GRATITUDE

Dear Leslie,

WOW!!!!!!! Just got the first 'personal profile' shopping guide and tips letter.

What a huge help this is. I see why I have been so frustrated with clothes shopping all these years --I paid all that money, and still didn't feel like I looked nice.

THANK YOU for showing me what to look for. I'll be able to save money, and look better than I ever have. What an incredibly helpful service you provide! Thank you for doing this!
